Detail of a carving on the so-called Franks Casket, an Anglo-Saxon whalebone box from around AD 700. It is therefore several decades later in date than the Sutton Hoo ship burial. The casket is carved with scenes from the Bible, pagan mythology and Roman history, with inscriptions in Latin and in runic script. This detail shows a warrior wearing a mail coat. The mail coat buried in the Sutton Hoo ship burial may have looked something like this when worn.
