Detail of the grotesque decoration on the windows

The very rich decorative apparatus that covers the seven windows of the southern side of the immense room with a brilliant chromatism, created in 1616 by Annibale Durante and assistants, is characterized by a profusion of eagles and dragons, heraldic animals of the Borghese family, inserted within coats of arms and integrated in the overflowing animal and 'monstrous' repertoire of the grotesque. In the baseboards of the shells the image of the mirror reflecting in a dark cave the ray of sunlight alludes to the Pope's mission to spread the light of divine grace on earth, here lacking the motto EIUS QUI MISIT (of the one who sent) of Paul V , probably lost.
