Nottingham-born Captain Albert Ball was a First World War fighter ace. He was killed while taking part in a dogfight on 7 May 1917. The memorial to him was created by architect Edwin Alfred Rickards and architectural sculptor Henry Poole.The stone plinth features depictions of SE5 fighter aircraft, the type in which Ball made eleven of his forty-four confirmed kills.
