The Peregrinatio in terram sanctam (Pilgrimage to the Holy Land) is one of the earliest printed pilgrimage accounts. It tells of the long and dangerous pilgrimage to Jerusalem undertaken in April 1483 by the dean of the Cathedral at Mainz, Bernhard von Breydenbach in the company of the painter Erhard Reuwich. In the many large-format woodcuts printed in the book, some of which are fold-out topographical views of Venice and Jerusalem, Reuwich combined the tradition of the townscape with his own visual experiences and notes from the journey.
