Culverin with the code of Charles V Detail

On its barrage, this cannon bears the two columns of Hercules topped with a sealed crown and the motto Plus Oultre (Further Beyond) of Emperor Charles V. The barrage is also ornamented with scalloping. The breech stud and tailpiece depict the head of an imaginary animal.
A remarkable piece in terms of the quality of the cast iron, this firearm also demonstrates particularly careful decoration. The breech stud is typical of the trend of tailpieces being decorated with animals (bears, lions, dogs, etc.), which spread across Europe in the early-16th century.
