Work by Johann Moritz Rugendas (1802–1858), a German artist who traveled through 19th-century Brazil documenting landscapes and daily life. The painting depicts deforestation, a common practice of the time, as seen in Tijuca Forest — cleared for tea and coffee plantations and later reforested under Emperor Pedro II, in a landmark effort for environmental restoration.
