This diptych (two-panel painting) is unusual because it was likely commissioned by a woman, Jeanne de Boubais, Abbess of the convent at Flines in northern France from 1507-1533. Her portrait on the back of the right panel is identifiable by the coat of arms above her head. Also pictured are St. Bernard (with crozier) and probably Guillaume de Bruxelles, Abbot of the nearby monastery. Artist Jean Bellegambe lived nearby in Douai, where his family home still stands. He supplied everything from church furnishings to picture frames to tapestries.
