This ca 1865 painting, by traveling artist George Frankenstein, depicts the town of Appomattox Court House, Virginia where on April 9, 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia to United States forces under General Ulysses S. Grant, effectively ending the Civil War.
