Sandgate, Kent

This watercolour was presented to the Walker, along with several others, by James Smith of Blundellsands. He hoped his gift would encourage the Walker to collect more examples of early British watercolours.

William Gilpin (1724 - 1804) noted in his book 'Observations on the Coast of Hampshire, Sussex and Kent', published in 1804, that Sandgate castle was a particularly good picturesque view and that the hills behind it were well shaped.
