Augustus Saint-Gaudens was asked to execute a statue that would serve as a revolving weathervane to stand atop the new Madison Square Garden in 1894. He copyrighted the model and set about providing the marketplace with reductions of the celebrated figure. There were three versions, although they were not mechanically produced but were remodeled by hand, thereby showing differences between each reduction. The version seen here is from the third series of reductions made by Saint-Gaudens, a series separated from the others by his use of a triangular pedestal. It was cast in 1899.
