Attempts at self-assertion in a moment of the utmost humiliation: in September 1941 the 17 year-old Kurt Mezei wrote in his diary how he and other youths cut out Jewish stars at the IKG – for themselves and the other members of the community still in Vienna. In his songbook he noted the couplet "Gelbe Fleckerl" by Walter Lindenbaum, which also refers to the Jewish stars. It was sung to the tune of the popular Viennese song "Schinkenfleckerln."
