Goethe’s roman à clef immediately became one of the most famous best-sellers and long-sellers in literary history, and also contains the first mention of a Christmas tree in German-speaking literature (p. 181).
The first edition of September 1774 was published anonymously, with three further editions being published in the same year. In the following years new editions were published in all parts of Germany, as well as translations and secondary literature. In 1787, Goethe made minor revisions to the work.
