Chief mural assistant Clifford Wight, Frida Kahlo, DIA director William Valentiner, and Diego Rivera meeting at Michigan Central Station in Detroit. DIA director William Valentiner wanted an artist of the times to create a permanent work on the walls of the museum. It was his idea to invite Mexico’s most famous muralist, Rivera, to the museum.
