Digging For Worms

Wilhelm Peters1884

Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum

Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum
Tromsø, Norway

A man is digging for worms with a shovel at the beach at low tide. Another man is walking towards him on the beach. A few boats are on land behind them. The sea and low hills in the distance.

The man in the foreground is wearing a traditional coastal Sami costume and he is digging for sandworms to use as bait for fishing. Peters travelled in Finnmark between 1883 and 1884, and this is a motif that pictures typical coastal life in the north. He most likely made this painting after he returned home, based on sketches drawn on his journey to the north.
