Dilruba is a popular bowed stringed instrument of North India which is about 300 years old. Its design attempts to combine the human voice-like quality of the Sarangi sound with the playing convenience of Sitar. The Sikh religious leader Guru Gobind Singh prescribed it as standard accompaniment for the devotional poetry sung in the Sikh temples and performances of regional vocal genres of West Bengal. It has a minor presence as a classical solo instrument.
