Following Magnus Carlsen's refusal to defend his title, the 2023 World Chess Championship, held in Astana, Kazakhstan, saw the clash of two challengers: Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren. Ding Liren won the title by defeating Nepomniachtchi in the rapid tiebreaks, becoming the 17th World Chess Champion.
