The Dingo (Canis dingo) is Australia's wild dog and was probably introduced from Asia over 4000 years ago. Dingoes rarely bark but will howl, particularly at night to attract pack members or to ward off intruders. As a carnivore, mammals form the main part of the Dingo's diet, especially rabbits, kangaroos, wallabies and wombats. When native species are scarce they are known to hunt domestic animals and livestock but also play an important role in controlling the numbers of environmentally destructive feral animals in some parts of the Australian outback.
