At the beginning of the 19th century the styles of
past eras began to be rediscovered; it was thought that there was no longer a
universally recognised criterion of beauty (as in the Neo-classical age) but
that it was possible to borrow different stylistic elements from the past, updating
them and contextualising them for the present.
