"With the purpose to emulate the Cau Ferrat of Santiago Rusiñol, assigned by Charles Deering, Miquel Utrillo I Morlius (Barcelona, 1862 – Sitges, 1934) author of the project and director of the Maricel complex works, incorporated new structural and decorative elements besides others from the middle ages or from the renaissance bought all over the Spanish territory.
When in the year 1921 Charles Deering, due to disagreements with Utrillo, left Sitges, he took the art and antiques collection gathered in Maricel, only remained there those objects that were part of the building as a whole.
As an example this “discoidal” funerary stele of medieval origin, possibly purchased by Utrillo in the zone of Lleida o Tarragona, fitted in the wall of the staircase of access to the Maricel Palace.
The Stele is decorated with a pointed coat of arms that contains three elements in the shape of a stick, surrounded by the inscription “(HIC) LOCUS EST · G · D (E) B URD (E) L LO” (this (is) the place (grave) of G (erau?) of Bordell)."
