When the makers of PEZ peppermint candies realized around 1954 that their peppermint adult breath mint was not selling well in the United States, they gave the candy and its dispenser a radical makeover. They changed the mint taste to sweet fruit flavors, and they added the head of a cartoon character to the dispenser that had previously looked like a cigarette lighter. The transformation worked: kids have been gobbling up PEZ candies ever since.
