The hemp rope was replaced with steel rope in the 1830' which was much more stable and secure and extended significantly less under load. These hoisting ropes are used as an upper or lower rope and are adapted to the different functions of raising and lowering in the mining industry. They are separated according to round, triangular strand and flat or ribbon ropes. Upper ropes are round and lower ropes are flat to ensure that they are not able to distort uncontrolled.
