Out of a pre-war population of approximately 1,000,000, not more than 5,000 Jewish children, many of them orphans, survived the war on Polish soil. The majority needed immediate medical assistance. The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (“the Joint”) responded by shipping vital supplies to the needy and supporting a network of schools, homes, hospitals, and cultural institutions. The Joint soon became “family” for Jewish child survivors of the Holocaust.
