The ammonites are extinct cephalopods that evolved in thousands of species and dominated the entire marine environment till Mesozoic age. They are the most specialized mollusks thanks to their rapid evolution, with great changes in morphology and ornamentation of the shell. In the dissected shell we can observe in detail the internal chambers in which the soft body of the cephalopod grew. Ammonites are considered high value guide fossils and are widely used in stratigraphy for dating sedimentary rocks.
