James Catanach was the first Australian in No. 455 Squadron to be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) but was captured by the enemy before receiving it. The medal was eventually presented to his family at a ceremony in Melbourne on 16 September 1944, six months after his murder by the Gestapo.
