"Maricel museum preserves a scale model of the sculpture entitled “Grief” from Josep Llimona (Barcelona, 1864 – 1934) coming from M.D. Jesús Pérez Rosales collection.
In the year 1907 Josep Llimona was awarded with the Honour Award of the International Exhibition of Fine Arts of Barcelona, for the sculpture entitled “Pain and Resignation” that he made himself in 1903 for the Vilanova family pantheon but in this case he represented it naked.
It was this sculptor first nude as he had strong religious convictions and was a founding member of the Artistic Circle of Saint Luke, that up to then had the prohibition of copy nude woman body as one of its rules.
Grief is one of the most representative modernist sculpture works and a sample of the symbolism adopted by some Catalan sculptors inspired by August Rodin work."
