Dante is one of the first authors to have been read by the young Leonardo, who is influenced by the visionary character of the Divine Comedy, but also interested in its doctrinal, astronomical and scientific content. He probably read it in the version with Landino’s commentary, printed in 1481, which had nineteen engravings attributed to Baccio Baldini and derived from drawings by Sandro Botticelli.
