Producer T Bone Burnett pushed both singers out of their comfort zones: the classic-rock front man delves into American country and folk, and the angel-voiced bluegrass fiddler explores the earthiness of the blues. Plant and Krauss crisscross the map of Americana, from the Townes Van Zandt tune "Nothin' to Little Milton's soul-blues classic "Let Your Loss Be Your Lesson." Their voices mesh beautifully-Plant exercises surprising restraint and turns in some downright gorgeous performances, while Krauss finds a sensual ache missing from her bluegrass work. The heartbreak in the songs also gets crucial support from the haunting arrangements: the drums create a smoky background pulse rather than a series of needling impacts, and the guitar, pedal steel, fiddle, and banjo weave a gauzy veil that's pierced by meticulously registered solos. Burnett leads the superb road band, which also includes guitarist Buddy Miller, double bassist Dennis Crouch, drummer Jay Bellerose, and Stuart Duncan on mandolin, banjo, and fiddle; expect a few radically retooled Zeppelin FREE TIX Things about me: Transplant from Michigan Lover of: photography, summer time BBQs, Chicken Salsa, inventory...
