CROBERT PLANT & ALISON KRAUSS On last year's wonderful Raising Sand
(Rounder), Robert Plant and Alison Krauss proved themselves an exception to the rule
about collaborations between strong personalities-instead of a clumsy pastiche, they
made a genuinely new sound. Producer T Bone Burnett pushed both singers out of
their comfort zones: the classic-rock front man delves into American country and folk,
and the angel-voiced bluegrass fiddler explores the earthiness of the blues. Plant and
Krauss crisscross the map of Americana, from the Townes Van Zandt tune "Nothin' to
Little Milton's soul-blues classic "Let Your Loss Be Your Lesson." Their voices mesh
beautifully-Plant exercises surprising restraint and turns in some downright gorgeous
performances, while Krauss finds a sensual ache missing from her bluegrass work. The
heartbreak in the songs also gets crucial support from the haunting arrangements: the
drums create a smoky background pulse rather than a series of needling impacts, and
the guitar, pedal steel, fiddle, and banjo weave a gauzy veil that's pierced by
meticulously registered solos. Burnett leads the superb road band, which also includes
guitarist Buddy Miller, double bassist Dennis Crouch, drummer Jay Bellerose, and
Stuart Duncan on mandolin, banjo, and fiddle; expect a few radically retooled Zeppelin
