Gilberto Gil
Gil Luminoso (DRG: Brazil)
...........
Had Brazilian icon
Gilberto Gil
recorded this simple
voice and guitar
album a decade ago,
it might have been
saddled with the title
Unplugged.
And if it had been recorded then-
years before Gil's touring schedule
was interrupted by his current gig as
Brazil's minister of culture-it
would probably be considerably
more lively. Gil's voice is in great
shape, but it isn't until midway
through the disc that he issues a
whoop, scats or partakes of his
breathtaking falsetto (perhaps
fittingly, on the perennial crowd-
pleaser "Cérebro Eletrônico"). He's
offered songs from his early career
with scant accompaniment before
(search for 1994's
Acoustic, or 1975's
Jorge Ben collaboration Gil e Jorge)
but he's never rendered them while
limiting the verbal and rhythmic
gymnastics that connote his
genius.-K. Leander Williams
