1 Amid all of the political snarl and chest-thumping anthems
comprising Coldplay's latest record, Viva la Vida or Death
and All His Friends, lies the simple, sweet and utterly
intoxicating Strawberry Swing. A lithe, Afro-pop-tinged tune,
it's borne aloft on frontman Chris Martin's falsetto, which is
itself wrapped around evocative lyrics that conjure images of
love, youth and the freedom of gorgeous weather. "The sky
could be blue, I don't mind/Without you, it's a waste of time."
sings Martin, all but ensuring you'll hit the repeat button
(frequently just as soon as this one-of-a-kind track fades
from the speakers

Albert Brooks on "Weeds'
3 Showtime's comedy about the adventures of dope-dealing
single mom Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker) has made
some good moves in its brand-new fourth season, but its
best move is bringing Brooks on board as Nancy's cranky
father-in-law, who didn't approve of Nancy before she
started selling pot and, of course, has some peccadilloes of
his own. Few people do self-absorbed neurosis better than
Brooks, but he's added a grumpy edge to this role that fits
right in with this series' broad satire

'The Unforeseen'
2 Austin filmmaker Laura Dunn examines a problem not
unique to Austin - overwhelming growth
documentary. The movie includes themes about
in this
environmentalism and Texas pride yet tries to understand
the developer who proposes a subdivision that threatens a
beloved local landmark. Most advocacy documentaries these
days preach to the converted, but Dunn's thoughtful film finds
several sides to the story, even as she lets you know which
side she's on. Now playing at Dallas' Angelika Film Center.

Gilberto Gil, 'Banda Larga Corde
5 In addition to being one of the pioneers of modern
Brazilian pop, Gilberto Gil has been his nation's minister of culture. But that makes him sound academic and
bureaucratic when he's neither. He offers more proof of that with his latest album, a sublime and sparkling blend of
Afro-Brazilian romanticism, reggae cool and R&B swagger. Though entirely in Portuguese, Banda Larga Cordel is
absolutely accessible to anyone. Gil is in the midst of his first tour of the US with a full band since 1999, but, alas,
there are no sites closer than Colorado. Our loss

Adele, "Chasing Pavements' video
4 This video featuring 19-year-old British singer Adele has been out for a while, but it's still worth noting for its
dreamy melancholy: Adele comes upon a car accident, and as she check it out, two people thrown from the car
begin dancing during the chorus of her song - all while still lying on a sidewalk. It all culminates in a group
shadow dance during the last big chorus. The Matthew Cullen-directed clip has been doing a slow burn on VH1 but
is in heavier rotation now, it's also available at http://www.myspace.com/adelelondon
