"His importance is huge, it's immense," said John Perry Barlow, the former lyricist
for the Grateful Dead and co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation who has
become a close friend.
Gil also found time to raise five children. One son, Pedro, died in a car accident in
1990, and today he is married to his fourth wife, Flora.
Gil, however, acknowledges that his musical creativity has suffered with all the
extracurricular activity. He says no longer feels the need to be at the cutting edge,
always innovating.
His last major album with all new music was Quanta in 1998.
"As a minister, I have very little time to dedicate to music, so I have made choices
marked by minimalism and taken a certain care in not to bet on adventures," he
said.
So the Canadian and U.S. tour will be a relief, and a chance to win over audiences
again.
"I like to please as an artist," Gil said. "I like to be liked, as an extension of my
natural desire to please as a human being."
