Gilberto Gil is Brazil's minister of culture. That means he's limited in
performing his better known role: musician. Still, he's taking time out
for an 11-date tour of North America. He considers it a vacation. The
World's Marco Werman attended Gil's concert last night in New
Bedford, Massachusetts.
Seeing Gil on stage in front of a full house, you can almost hear the
collective harrumph of buttoned-up establishment types asking, "Is this
any way for a government minister to act?"

But this is the same Gilberto Gil as ever. As Minister he may have a
different uniform: he often wears a suit and tie. On stage he's in
bleached jeans. Back stage, he slips into a distinguished gray Adidas
track suit.
"And what about the punctuality you have to be on time."

release from Andy
Palacio could well find itself as
a top critical favorite this year.
In Belize, being as small as it
is, everyone knows everyone
else. And musical ideas cross-
fertilize rapidly. Here are a few
tracks from "Watina," some
going back in Andy Palacio's
catalog, plus several from
other artists who occupy
Belize's small musical universe
with him.
