Time Out New York March 15-21, 2007 Time Out New York 135 Gilberto Gil Gil Luminoso (DRG; Brazil) Had Brazilian icon Gilberto Gil recorded this simple voice-and-guitar album a decade ago, it might have been saddled with the title Unplugged. And if it had been recorded then- years before Gil's touring schedule was interrupted by his current gig as Brazil's minister of culture-it would probably be considerably more lively. Gil's voice is in great shape, but it isn't until midway through the disc that he issues a whoop, scats or partakes of his breathtaking falsetto (perhaps fittingly, on the perennial crowd pleaser "Cérebro Eletrônico"). He's offered songs from his early career with scant accompaniment before (search for 1994's Acoustic, or 1975's Jorge Ben collaboration Gil e Jorge). but he's never rendered them while gymnastics that connote his limiting the verbal and rhythmic genius.-K.
