Influential singer goes solo pop musician
helped transform Brazilian music
"Once I was the stone-thrower - now I am the glass."
That's how the legendary Brazilian-pop musician Gilberto Gil describes his new worldview
since becoming Brazil's minister of culture in 2003,
The "stone thrower" phase of Gil's life dates back a few decades, to when he spoke out in
sharp opposition to the military dictatorship that exiled him in 1969 and stayed in power until
the 1980s.

That à dictator would go so far as to exile a musician speaks to the influence that Gil had on
Brazlian popular culture as one of the leaders of the revolutionary cultural movement
Tropicalia in the '60s, along with fellow musician Caetano Veloso.
Gil comes to Hill Auditorium on Friday for a show sponsored by the University Musical
Society. It will be a unique outing, in that this is Gil's first solo-acoustic tour in a long career of
making more groove-driven music and fronting a full band. The tour was inspired by Gil's
latest release, "Gil Luminoso" in which Gil's soulful vocals are framed only by his acoustic-
guitar picking and strumming,
"Playing solo allows me a freedom of approach to the songs or parts of them that we can
rarely have by sharing the playing with other musicians," Gil recently said by e-mail interview
from Rio de Janeiro. "The solitude dimension becomes an advantage rather than a restricting
element. But it is, surely, a different mood as compared with the full band sound and attitude
of most of my albums. It's more intimate and light, more concentrated and relaxed."
Gil is still a folk hero in Brazil for his role in the Tropicalia movement, which integrated more
traditional Brazilian-music styles with the pop music being imported from the U.S. and
England.
"I cannot imagine Brazilian popular music without Gil's contribution" says Bebete Martins, a
native of Brazil and the director of programming and outreach for the Latin American and
Caribbean Studies program at the University of Michigan. "The Tropicalia movement
represented a big change in Brazil. It was a significant gesture of openness during a time
that the establishment was not open at all."
As minister of culture, Gil has helped to connect Brazil's various and culturally disparate
regions with programs aimed at educating the public about the nation's rich musical heritage.
"It is quite different being a minister of culture," said Gil. "It's a whole new job and a
fascinating one. It's another art form, as fascinating as music or poetry - with 10 times more
responsibility, because it can affect people's lives in a tangible way
