sa Pledge your support for PRI'S The World DOC The Changing World Gilberto Gil is also showing the influence that a culture czar can have Since he took the job, spending by Brazil's culture ministry has increased by more than 50 percent. One of Gil's more effective initiatives is a program called Culture Points. It provides government grants in the 50 to 60 thousand dollar range to assist young artists, everyone from painters to hip-hop musicians. "We have 600 almost 700 points now..." The only cultural managing Gilberto Gil is doing on this tour though is leading the audience in sing-a-longs of his standards...like Palco. This is a solo tour. And the bulk of the songs Gil is singing -- and whistling -- with his guitar appear on his latest CD "GiLuminoso." Brazilian authorities forced Gil to leave Brazil because of his art in 1969. And now he's generously overseeing the culture of his country. It makes this reprise of his 1984 song "A Raca Humana," the human race, a fitting inclusion for his new album. . "The human race is a good and bad product..." Gilberto Gil will be in the US through March 31 for six more dates including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Miami. For The World, I'm Marco Werman.
