a Tania is a flamenco dancer who is not content to string
together a number of individual solos and end the
Levening with a communal tablao. Her programs are con-
structed along thematic lines - such as the show she did a
few years ago, when she presented flamenco as seen
through its African and Middle Eastern roots. A powerful, at
times severe, performer, she is intriguing to watch as she
pushes traditional forms in the direction of even greater dra-
matic, sometimes almost filmic, impact. Her newest piece,
Passage of the Muse, is built on the canto jondo -- the
blues of flamenco; it is inspired by memories of her child-
hood in Andalusia, where she shared a passion for Gypsy
culture with her painter grandmother Judith Diem. Dancing
with La Tania in this evocation of roots is longtime partner
Andrés Marin, whose defiance onstage at times seems to be as much inspired by rock culture as by Iberian values.
Flamenco Nuevo may have been born in Spain, but with La Tania, it is thriving in the Bay Area. Fri.-Sat, 8 p.m.;
