Had Brazilian icon
Gilberto Gil
recorded this simple
voice-and-guitar
album a decade ago,
it might have been
saddled with the title Unplugged.
And if it had been recorded then-
years before Gil's touring schedule
was interrupted by his current gigas
Brazil's minister of culture-it
would probably be considerably
more lively, Gil's voice is in great
shape, but it isn't until midway
through the disc that he issues a
whoop, scats or partakes of his
breathtaking falsetto (perhaps
fittingly,
on the perennial crowd.
pleaser "Cérebro Eletrônico"). He's
offered songs from his early career
with scant accompaniment before
(search for 4's Acoustic, or 1975's
Jorge Ben collaboration Gil e Jorge),
but he's never rendered them while
limiting the verbal and rhythmic
gymnastics that connote his
genius.-K. Leander Williams
