Tropical Fever Key figure in the Sixties Tropicalia movement in Brazil along with his contemporary, Caetano Veloso, political activist throughout his musical career, and currently Minister of Culture for Lula's government, Gilberto Gil is much more than a musician. He views expression as a fundamental political issue, com- bining the traditional with the modern, Western pop-he was hugely influenced by the Beatles after spending time in London in the Sixties-with Brazilian rhythms.
