punishments. However, as the satin, the city
allowed itself to slide astutely between the time
fingers, showing its pleats, but, also, its capacity
of preserving itself soft and smooth as the original
material of which it was made.
"For the contemporaneous tourism,
there, the place where one goes, must
be a destination. Not a fatality!"
It is common to say that the "Carnaval" reflects
our real social contradictions. Nowadays, the
"Trio Elétrico » became an enterprise. The
ropes of the « Bloco » (blocs) segregate. The
box seats discriminate. What will be the future
of the hugest street event of the planet?
The question is placed since the beginningh:
"Carnaval" reflects our real social
contradictions. The "Carnaval" does not
completely suppress the real, even though
that may be the intention of this or of any
other big event celebrated in honor of the
collective ecstasies and exultation. The spirit
of the great collective event is to transcend
the level of human limitations and approach
us of the largest gayety. Even partially, in the
"Carnaval" of Bahia, or Recife, of Rio and that
of the many Brazilian cities, what can be seen
is people, many people, that are opened for the
accomplishment of this spirit of integrity of the
gaiety, although the social body carries prints of
its imperfection. We should always work for a
more and more participative "Carnaval". Yet, I
get enthusiastic over the fact that it is already
shared by people absolutely different in what
concerns communion level.
A short time ago, the most progressive
reading of the bahian plurality, went from
the mixture, by the harmonization of chronic,
religious and urban contrasts. Today, what we
see is a sort of a strange tendency, somewhat
separatist "black or white". Are we 100%
blacks? Or, are we 100% crossbreed?
I never forget that, at Bahia, the candomblé
was forbidden by law, until the Roberto Santos
Government, at the end of the 70's. It was not
as nowadays when one feels the hostility of
other religious groups competing for space. It
was the interdicition guaranteed by the State.
Today, things, although more complex, turn
out from a more democratic way, where the
confrontation of ideas and positions on the
interracially and the public discussion on this
questions its made on a more responsible way.
I think that we are marching towards a society
more end more cultural and racial crossbreed.
The 50's and the 60's were the years of the
bahian historic and cultural renaissance. The
UFBA (Federal University of Bahia) of Prof.
Edgar Santos (CEAO-Center of Afro-Oriental
Studies, Music School, Theater, School of
Arts), the petrol and Petrobrás, the Mapa
generation, the New Cinema, the Tropicalia,
the Vila Velha Theater... What is missing for a
new bahian renaissance?
We need to complete moving towards a
contemporaneous life at the complex level of our
time. And, also, we are missing the conclusion
of the modernization work, now that
starting to face the challenges that some people
call modernity and others post-modernity. What
we demand here is the humanistic renaissance
when the natural life faces us to the first pos
human manifestations. It may seem extravagant
but the deal is just to look around and see what
the capital, the industrialism, the cientificism,
the monoculture of progress and the technical
religions produce and we shall feel that the
future renaissance will be a convergence of the
inedited mutations for which it is necessary to
prepare ourselves by means of adaptation and of
critics and resistance.
A polemic theme is the use of tourism in
disadvantage of the culture of a given
population. In the process of attracting
tourism, how can we avoid the vulgarization
of the culture?
The conscience that tourism depends of culture
is scattered all over, more and more. Tourists
go to places to live the life as it reflexes on
what different and characteristic everybody of
the place were able to produce; something
that determines another attractive and curious
identity. The idea of a patterned international
ambient that has prevailed for the tourism
policies at a certain, already overcome, moment.
Today, what attracts is the difference. For
the contemporary tourism, there, the place
where we go, must be a destination, not a
fatality! And, Bahia is intensively different. It is
important to appreciate our differences.
"Presently the raw materials are different
and the most popular, crossbreed, different
they are, more raw material they will be,
in the approaching productive paradigm."
The bahian culture is different due to its
plurality. What does Bahia have?
Bahia is, beyond all, generous, a joyful people,
receptive, that cultures affection and friendship,
a story weaved with threads of different colors;
an extraordinary capacity of being at the same
time, herself and many others. The tourism
policies will have success, if it is what we desire.
Why the fine biscuit continues inaccessible to
the masses of people, as Oswald de Andrade
denounced decades ago? How should we
fight the cultural litter that invades the mass
communication tying the audience and
monitoring the public opinion?
All of this is tied to the industrial model of
Communications of the global world with its
productive rationality and extreme consume. It is
a world question and the capacity of ruling that
the countries and their societies must have and
may have to have, with relation to their radio
diffusion systems, will depend on the correlation
of forces in the general political plan. I would,
also, say that the social conscience around the
question will inform and orient the debate. In
this debate, the present administration has tried
to be mindful to all of this and has not drawn
back from its stimulating role.
More than half of the present CDs and DVDs
market in Brazil is made of falsified products.
Do you agree that the final prices for a CD, a
DVD, are very expensive? How can we combat
this piracy?
The piracy is a complex phenomena, initially
because of the simple definition of what is piracy
what it may have been and it is not any longer
,
of what it never was and presently it becomes,
etc. Secondly, because piracy involves not only a
cultural question but, as well, an economical and
a technological one. By instance, the new digital
technologies are at their origin, of democratic
spirit (I would even say, anarchist) and therefore,
a challenge to the rigid concept of intellectual
territory and propriety. It is important to think
calmly and with accuracy on the different
aspects of the question and establish an ample
