CO GILBERTO GIL Brazilian legend Gilberto Gil finally makes his local debut, more
than 45 years into his career. He was one of the leading "cultural cannibals" of the
late-60s tropicatia movement, which created a powerful postmodern fusion of
everything from psychedelia to soul to musique concrete while remaining rooted in
Brazilian traditions. Though in 1969 Gil and cohort Caetano Veloso were forced to flee
Brazil's military dictatorship for London, both became national icons after their return
in 1972, and in 2003 Gil was appointed minister of culture under Lula (though he
stepped
down earlier this year to concentrate on his music again). Rather than deliver
his usual career-spanning greatest-hits package, for this tour Gil will focus on new
music, particularly the just-released Banda Larga Cordel Music Latina). He's
still obsessed with technological utopianism-the new disc's title translates loosely to
"broadband pamphlet"-and he's invited the audience to record, videotape, or
pe of the highlights of the 2008 concert calendar. I just wish the new album were
photograph anything they like (for personal use, of course). This show is undoubtedly
better-Gil's in fine voice, but it's loaded with feel-good reggae and treacly,
overstuffed arrangements > 8 PM, Pavilion, Ravinia Festival, Green Bay and Lake

MIQUEL GIL Though Maria del Mar Bonet is the face of Catalan music, at this concert
she's the opener-she has her own show Friday with the Grant Park Orchestra.
Tonight's headliner, Valencia's Miquel Gil, is less popular, but to me he's a more
gripping singer, with a less sentimental style and an appealingly gruff voice
somewhere between the dyspeptic croak of Tom Waits and the rough but sophisticated
croon of Paolo Conte. His latest disc, Eixos (Temps, 2007), is a vibrant tangle of Medi-
terranean sounds-he tackles music from Greece, Portugal, the Maghreb, and Spain
(with his sensual, aching delivery, he nails flamenco) and fortifies the album's rootsy,
acoustic textures with rock vigor. Gil and his band will play two sets at his Chicago
debut; for the second they'll be supported by the Arab Orchestra f Barcelona, a
sturdy ensemble of Spaniards and North Africans. > 6:30 PM, Pritzker Pavilion,

THE HOOD INTERNET The formula the Hood Internet use for their mashups-a
cappella raps with indie-rock backing tracks-could easily produce nothing but cheap
jokes. But while STV SLV and ABX (aka Steve Reidell and Aaron Brink of May or May
Not) aren't above having a little ironic fun, it's out of love-their creations are never
condescending tricks designed to make rappers look dumb. Their new mix tape, The
Hood Internet vs. Chicago (downloadable free at the hoodinternet.com), pairs
Chicagoans past and present: they lighten up Common's fundamentalist hip-hop
"I used to Love H.E.R." by tossing it onto new-wavey garage from Bang!
Bang!, match up a Crucial Conflict chant and a droning Reds and Blue tune for what
might be the first crunk dirge, and make an uberjam out of Green Velvet's "Shake and
Pop" and Mic Terror's "Juke Them Hoes." The Hood Internet will DJ at this release
party, alongside a few artists from the mix tape: Arcadias (members of the Changes),
Shala Esquire of Qualo, and Jeremy Bolen of Chin Up Chin Up (with Bobby Burg). Yea
Big & Kid Static, who go toe-to-toe with Ministry on "Eatchyo Stigmata," perform live.
