Doge’s cat

Museum of Natural History of Venice

Museum of Natural History of Venice
Venice, Italy

Mummified cat with a rat between its paws. The specimen was found in the ancient rowing ship of Francesco Morosini, Doge of Venice from 1688 to 1694. Given the place where it was found, it is known to everyone as "the Doge's cat". In fact, it seems that Morosini had a cat whom he was particularly fond of, so that he was always carrying it with himself, even at war. At cat’s death, Morosini ordered it to be embalmed with a rat in its paws, as you can still see today in its glass case.
