Brooke Shields started her career as a child model and, at the age of 12, received praise from movie critics while generating controversy in her role as a child prostitute in the film Pretty Baby (1978). Her later teen roles in Blue Lagoon (1980) and Endless Love (1981) increased her notoriety as did her print and television ads for Calvin Klein jeans in which her tagline was You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing.??Shields put her acting and modeling on hold to earn a 1987 degree in French literature from Princeton University. Since then, she has had major roles on Broadway as well as having guest star and recurring roles in several television series including The Middle where, playing against her earlier glamorous image, her character is a surly, lower class, single mother with a family of uncontrollable juvenile delinquents.
