Surprise toys, whose specific characteristics were a mystery until after purchased, proved a successful trend in the toy industry. Toy companies sought to make dolls more multidimensional by adding new surprise elements to the packaging and more hidden gems for kids to uncover. Spin Master’s Candylocks dolls came cocooned inside cotton candy cones, which kids unraveled to reveal the doll underneath. The cotton candy-like fluff was the dolls’ hair, which could be fashioned into different styles with the accessories hidden inside. The line had a built-in element of surprise and collaboration (for trading and sharing).
