In 1989, Matchbox Toys released its Real Model Collection of fashion dolls. The dolls were based on popular models Cheryl Tiegs, Beverly Johnson, and Christie Brinkley. Tiegs was best known for her work in “Sports Illustrated Swimsuit” issues from 1970, 1975, and 1983. She also acted in both television and film. The Real Model Collection seemed like one of Matchbox’s attempts to reach a new audience—girls interested in hair play and fashion.
