While fathers, sons, and brothers served in the U.S. military during World War II, seamtresses on the homefront remembered those in the services by sewing and selling little sailor dolls and soldier dolls of printed cloth. The seamtress displayed their skills in the chain stitiches and satin stitiches used to highlight details of the sailor's neck kerchief, hands, feet, and facial features. Repeated washings evident by the softness of the fabric and the fading of the colors suggests that this was a much used and nuch loved doll.
