Penny Brite served as the Deluxe Reading Corporation's fashion doll to compete with Barbie. First offered in 1963, Penny Brite stood at 8 inches tall and presented a child fashion doll to please the parents that found Barbie's physique too adult. Deluxe Reading made a variety of extra outfits for Penny Brite, and the doll had several play sets such as a bedroom, kitchen, schoolroom, and beauty parlor. Penny Brite never achieved Barbie's popularity, and the doll line ended when its manufacturer faced bankruptcy in 1970.
