Dolls depicting men are fairly rare. Character dolls of men are even more so. The gentleman pictured here appealed to adult consumers as an artist doll as well as a doll intended for a child. Doll historians attribute the doll to Damerval & Laffanchy of Montreuil, France, and date the doll to about 1918, around the time that World War I came to an end. Wartime often inspired doll makers to market dolls of men, especially those dressed as soldiers.
