The Fiji was coming from Germany, and carried cargo from at least 6 different toy factories. Germany was a major producer of toys of all kinds during the C19th, and the porcelain factories of Thuringia exported china dolls and teasets for children all over the world.
Dolls were often sold as parts. The limbs and the head could then be attached to bodies of cloth, kid, or composition
This socket headed doll was made of bisque, or porcelain slip.It was moulded in one piece to the neck, which was then inserted into the body. The hole in the top allowed for easy addition of eyes – particularly those that open and shut.
