Established in the 1840s, the Jumeau firm carved out a niche for premier-quality dressed lady dolls. Early Jumeau dolls had comparatively coarse and unrefined bodies, but their beautifully painted, expressive faces made of especially fine bisque received much praise. This doll is an example of Jumeau's early "premiere" or first lady doll in bisque, a model produced for approximately 20 years because of its appeal and popularity. It is now known among collectors as the Portrait Jumeau Lady. Jumeau sold a completed version of this doll, but also exported the head and shoulderplate to America for commercial and home assembly. Later, the doll's delicate facial features became the model for the face of Jumeau's famed b??b?? doll, first available in the mid 1870s.
