Doll

Created by Grace Storey Putnam, the Bye-lo Baby was one of the first attempts to manufacture a realistic infant doll. Most similar dolls of the 1920s offered an idealized, cutesy face. Putnam, the legends goes, modeled her doll after a three-day old infant she found in a Salvation army hospital in Los Angeles. The doll was hugely successful, prompting retailers to dub it the "Million Dollar Baby" and prompting other manufacturers to produce scores of imitators.
